Samaro Supports PIC at the Shell Eco-Marathon

A partner of PIC (Proto Insa Club) since 2009, Samaro is proud of the excellent results obtained at Rotterdam’s Ahoy Arena between May 15 and 18 during Shell Eco-Marathon Europe 2014.

After fixing an engine problem, this year’s team took EPIC (2014 model) to performance levels near its record high of 1465 km/l, scoring 1280 km/l in the first run and 1396 km/l in the second run.

This prototype features a transmission chain lubricated with Molykote Omnigliss and its engine oil is augmented with Molykote A. The bearings were lubricated with Molykote G-2001 high-speed grease, which decreases the coefficient of friction. The brake calipers were lubricated with Molykote -0532FM hydraulic oil. Serenys Degrip Plus anti-seize lubricant was used to help disassemble the metal parts (oxidized fasteners, motor studs, metal parts oxidized by contact with brake fluid).

Oxidation on the electrical contacts of the sensors on the circuit board was cleaned away with Serenys Cleantronic. The threaded fasteners and pins were locked in place with Permabond A 113 threadlocker. Permabond 2011 cyanoacrylate adhesive was used to repair broken metal parts subjected to strong vibrations.

The brake discs, and especially the brake pads in contact with the drain oil, were degreased with Molykote Metal Cleaner. Permabond 737 cyanoacrylate adhesive was used for quick aluminum-to-aluminum bonding and especially bonding of aluminum plates exposed to vibrations. Permabond ET5428 two-part epoxy adhesive was used for carbon-to-carbon and carbon-to-aluminum bonding on the wheels.

This edition of the Shell Eco-Marathon was trying for PIC. A change in the competition’s regulations (turning radius) meant that it was the last time the EPIC prototype could be used in the competition.

Special trophies were awarded to the teams that excelled in safety, teamwork and vehicle design.

The competition inspires future engineers to turn their ideas for sustainable mobility into reality, even if just for a few days. It also serves as a forum for passionate debate on what the cars of the future may be like.

We hope that a new prototype with new carbon wheels molded with Xiameter RTV-4234-T4 base and curing agent and bonded with Permabond ET5428, a fast-curing (10-minute pot life and 1-hour handling time) two-part epoxy adhesive for composites that is particularly suited to the bonding of carbon fiber, will lead the team to finish on the rostrum in the next edition of the Shell Eco-Marathon.
