Guide: Select the MOLYKOTE® gas contact approved lubricant best suited to your application!

To guarantee optimum lubrication, it is crucial to meticulously prepare the surface of the materials to be lubricated before any application.

With this in mind, Samaro and its partner Socomore recommend the use of Diestone DLS. This is a chlorinated hydrocarbon-free, fast-evaporating cleaning and degreasing agent that provides optimum surface preparation for effective lubrication.

When it comes to lubrication in environments where gas is present, the choice of the right lubricant is crucial to ensuring that equipment runs smoothly and operations are safe. In this guide, we look at the different types of lubricant suitable for contact with gas, the relevant approvals and specific industrial applications.

Which lubricants should be used in the presence of gas?

When choosing a lubricant for an application involving gas, it is essential to opt for products specially designed to withstand the rigorous conditions of these environments. Fluorinated lubricants, particularly those based on PFPE (perfluoropolyether), are often preferred because of their excellent chemical stability, resistance to extreme temperatures and compatibility with various types of gas.

How do you know if a lubricant is suitable for contact with gas?

When assessing the suitability of a lubricant for an application involving gas, several factors need to be taken into account. Firstly, check whether the lubricant is approved for specific use in the presence of gas. Approvals such as DVGW, BAM and Air Liquid ensure that the lubricant meets the required safety and performance standards. In addition, look at the properties of the lubricant, such as its operating temperature range, material compatibility and resistance to environmental conditions, to ensure that it is suitable for your specific application.

Approvals for lubrication in the presence of gas

DVGW approval:

DVGW-approved lubricants are certified for use in gas systems that comply with German standards. MOLYKOTE® G-5511 and MOLYKOTE® 1102 are reliable choices for this approval, offering proven performance under rigorous conditions.

BAM Approval:

BAM approved lubricants are approved for use in environments involving hazardous substances such as flammable gases or aggressive chemicals.

Air Liquid approved:

Lubricants that comply with Air Liquid standards are designed to offer reliable performance and maximum safety in environments containing gas.

Applications in various industrial sectors

Lubricants suitable for contact with gas are used in a variety of industrial applications, including aerospace, automotive (particularly in hydrogen-powered vehicles), military, medical, extreme sports (such as diving) and marine (particularly in submarines).
